This was a comment that I received today on my Facebook campaign page:
"Amy Hoogstraet for Nixa City Council I don't believe Nixa is the city for you. I think you will find Springfield is more welcoming of the liberal mindset. Nixa as a whole is a very Christian conservative mindset. I don't believe the majority of the city is open to LGBTQ, since it is directly apposes the Bible. And as I stated, Nixa is primarily Christian conservative. We are mostly Trump patriots."
This was my response:
With all due respect, you are wrong. Nixa IS, in fact, the city for me - it is my home. I am not going anywhere. Rather, I will stay here and do my best to make a difference and to help as many of my neighbors as I can, whether I'm elected to city council or not. Nixa is also home to a lot of other people who are progressive, non-Christian, LGBTQ, etc. - perhaps more than you realize. They have a tendency to stay very quiet and keep to themselves due to prevailing attitudes like yours. You also may not realize that it is very possible to be Christian but not conservative. And believe me, I am very aware that the majority of people in Nixa are of a "Christian conservative mindset." What you and many others don't seem to understand is that the people in Nixa who don't think that way or who are LGBTQ, etc., are just as important as you, and deserve a voice just as much as you do. Nixa should work for ALL of its residents, not just those in the majority. If not everyone in Nixa is conservative, then why should every member of city council be conservative? That would not be an accurate representation of our populace. In my experience, it is when you have people of differing backgrounds, viewpoints, and beliefs working together with respect and open minds that better decisions and policies can be made. If elected, I will work for ALL Nixans, and those here who are marginalized can be sure that I will hear them, see them, and give them a voice.
If you live in Nixa's first district and my response resonates with you, please vote for me on April 6! This is your chance to make your voice known.
